Knitted Fingerless Mitts—Steampunk Style

This past week I’ve been in Indianapolis at the annual ACFW(American Christian Fiction Writers) Conference. I was there for several reasons:
  • To improve my craft.
  • To connect with other non-normal people (writers).
  • To discover the viability of new Steampunk Fables series.

Indianapolis was a HUGE win—for all three goals.

And one of the highlights was the genre dinner on Friday night. During this event we got to dress in costumes representative of our genre…can anyone say STEAMPUNK!

I had a blast getting ready for the event, but I discovered that getting the quality I wanted with my costume meant I needed to make most of it myself. Or at the very least, alter ready-made parts of it.

Over the next few weeks I’ll continue to share the different projects I tackled. Today’s focus is the pair of knitted fingerless gloves I designed.

Knitted Fingerless Mitts—Steampunk Style

Knitting Supplies:
2 skeins Laines Du Nord CashSilk (67 yards per skein - 50% merino extrafine, 25% silk, 25% cashmere)
Size 7 knitting needle

Various Steampunk style charms
Jump rings
12 inches chain
12 inches silk velvet ribbon

DIRECTIONS:
Cast on 46 stitches using the long tale cast on and IMPORTANT NOTE: leave at least 12 inches of yarn to use to sew up the sides of mitt.

Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: Knit 1 *knit 1, purl 1* to the last stitch, knit the last stitch
Row 4: Purl 1 *purl 1, knit 1* to the last stitch, purl the last stitch
Row 5: Knit
Row 6: Purl
Row 7: Begin lace pattern (4 row repeat) and continue until glove measures 4 inches from cast on

Repeat Row 3
Repeat Row 4
Knit 1 row
Purl 1 row

Begin Twisted Rib (2 row repeat) and continue until cuff measures 3 inches.
Bind off loosely and IMPORTANT NOTE: leave at least 12 inches of yarn to use to sew up the sides of mitt.

LACE PATTERN (4 row repeat):

Row 1: Knit 1, *YO, knit 2TOG* to the last stitch, then knit 1
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: Knit 2, *YO, knit 2TOG*
Row 4: Purl

TWISTED RIB PATTERN (2 row repeat):
Row 1: Knit 1, Purl 1, *Knit 1 tbl, Purl 1* to end
Row 2: *Knit 1, Purl 1 tbl* to end

FINISHING:
Starting at the cast on edge, use the mattress stitch and seam one and a half inches. Weave in remaining yarn.

Now move to the cast off edge and using the mattress stitch seam for 3 and ½ inches. This leaves the opening you need for your thumb. Weave in remaining yarn.

EMBELLISHMENT:
I recommend you attach a small chain with various charms to the wrist, as well as adding ribbons.

  1. The gloves were sooooooo great and went so well with your amazing outfit. This seems so simple maybe even I could knit them... ok, that was over-doing it.

  2. Edie, I'm a huge fan of steampunk! I'm excited that you got a green light on Steampunk Fables. And I know I told you this at the genre dinner, but I'll say it again: you looked FABULOUS!! I think yours was my favorite costume of the night...I look forward to reading future posts to find out how you put it together. I enjoyed getting to know you a little better over the weekend.
